photoblog image Jazz night

Jazz night

This is Kim Waters, a very famous Jazz musician from Baltimore. I was fortunate to attend one of his shows in DC. He played at Blues Alley, a Jazz club known for its dark and romantic interior.

On this very day, I had just finished taking my test shots before I was told no picture taking allowed. I felt very terrible that I'd paid so much to be here but not allowed to take pics, it's like I had a weapon loaded with rounds and saw the enemy coming but told not to pull the trigger....oouch! Nevertheless, I enjoyed the show and the 85mm 1.2 lens really saved the day as per shooting under low ligthing conditions.

PS: I have intentionally not removed all the grains or noise in this shot to add some feel of the rugged interior of Blues Alley!

I'm glad you got to take this shot. i love Kim and it saddens me when the ordinary punter is not allowed to take shots at a concert that they paid good money to attend.
Dotun Ayodeji: thanks Johnny.

I like this in B&W, Dotun. Nothing like a jazz sax and player! So glad you were able to get your test shots in. smile
Dotun Ayodeji: Thanks Ginnie, good to know you like Jazz too.

Great shot. Perfect for a black and white shot as when I think of jazz, I think 50s era and the old-school cameras and film. Beautiful!
Dotun Ayodeji: Thanks PJ.
Dotum, in spite of the bad conditions that you say to have had when taking this photo, the result is worthy to hang in any premises of jazz.
Dotun Ayodeji: Thanks Jose!
Perfect B&W. I like the tones in this picture. Well done smile
Dotun Ayodeji: Thanks Sarthak, I also think the BW works pretty well.

Ah the sax, wailing away in the night. The sound and properties of the sax is jazz.

I think this picture captures the atmosphere very well.

On the subject of being allowed to take photo's. It is to be expected to be prevented under these circumstances - but i always feel that to the extent that the subject operates in public or for the public, you should be able to record it.
Dotun Ayodeji: Thanks Louis.

one reason why I miss US... jAZZ AND THE BLUES
Dotun Ayodeji: I am sure you get them in UK too.
Hi Dotun. very nice "TEST" shot!! You have captured the ambience and the musician's passion very well indeed. I agree with Louis, if the photos are not used for commercial gain, what harm are you doing, taking photographs of public figures for your own enjoyment? A sad and ridiculous state of affairs. Kindest regards, Neil.
Dotun Ayodeji: Thanks Neil, I could not agree any more.

That is one nice (and expensive wink ) piece of glass Dotun, super shot smile
Dotun Ayodeji: Thanks Chris.
If you ask me, you did well to get the shot. It's a beauty, Dotun.

I am a big fan of jazz photograpy, and this image is no disappointment.

How sad that he should miss out on seeing photos like this of himself. I know I would love this if it were of me.
Dotun Ayodeji: Thanks, I am glad you like it.
